The Stealer of Joy: Why Closed Doors Are Part of Your Warfare (and How to Walk Through Them)
Updated: 3 days ago

"The greatest mistake in spiritual warfare is losing your joy at a closed door — because when joy is stolen, passivity takes over and the enemy thrives."
Life does not always turn out the way we expected. I have surveyed rooms full of believers and asked the same question: “Has your life turned out the way you thought it would?” Almost without exception, the answer is no. We dreamed of doing great things for God. We believed the doors would open, the breakthroughs would come, and the path would be clear. Then life happened. Things became mysterious, baffling, and sometimes deeply discouraging.
Every one of us has stood in front of a closed door. It may have been a marriage that never materialized, a business that refused to take off, a ministry opportunity that stayed shut, or a promise you believed God for that still has not come to pass. You prayed. You believed. You did everything you knew to do. Yet the door remained closed, and you did not even know how to pray about it anymore.
At that point, many believers make the biggest mistake in the warfare of life: they lose their joy and become passive.
The Devil Is the Stealer of Joy
The enemy is not only the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). He is also the stealer of joy. He understands that if you keep walking through open doors, your confidence grows, your faith strengthens, and your testimony multiplies. Joy produces movement. Passivity produces stagnation. When he can steal your joy at a closed door, he can keep you from knocking, seeking, and asking. He can leave you confused, questioning God’s love, and unwilling to engage.
These closed doors are not obstructions meant to stop you. They are part of the warfare, and the warfare is part of God’s plan. Your response at that door will determine whether you move forward or remain stuck.
7 Keys to Walking Through Closed Doors
1. Closed doors are not dead ends
From where you are to where God is taking you, there are doors. These doors are portals of destiny. Every major breakthrough in your life—a new season, a relationship, a calling, a fresh chapter—will be marked by a door. Some of those doors are open. Some are closed. And some are guarded by powers who know that if you walk through them, your life, your testimony, and your destiny will shift.
Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7). That is not the language of a passive life. It is the language of faith, persistence, and spiritual engagement. Most people stop at the door, but warriors keep knocking.
2. Discouragement is derailment
James 1:2–4 tells us to count it all joy when we face trials, because the testing of our faith produces steadfastness. A soldier who fights without passion will not last. When you stay full of the joy of the Lord, even with a closed door in front of you, you stop fighting from a place of weakness and begin to fight from a place of strength. “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). That joy does not depend on open doors. It is drawn from His presence, and the enemy cannot tolerate an atmosphere of joy.
Declare it: “I love You, Lord, more than any breakthrough. No open or closed door is greater than You.”
3. Trust God’s timing, not your own
There is a time for everything (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Sometimes “closed” simply means “not now.” A good thing at the wrong time can destroy you. Jesus Himself said, “My time has not yet come” (John 2:4). When you walk closely with God, you learn to discern seasons. Some doors will not open no matter how hard you push. Others open when you least expect them—by grace, not by your striving. That is grace. Trust His timing more than your own.
4. God is wiser than you
Some doors are closed for your protection, not your punishment. When Noah entered the ark, the Lord shut the door (Genesis 7:16). What felt like confinement was actually preservation. There are people, opportunities, and places God will not allow you to enter because He sees what you cannot see. What feels like a loss today is often the very thing that preserves your life, your calling, and your future. Walk with Him long enough and you will thank Him for the doors He refused to open.
5. God is rerouting your path
A closed door is not always an ending. Many times it is a redirection. Just like GPS says “rerouting” when you miss a turn, God is recalculating and leading you toward a better route that aligns with His purpose. What feels like a setback is often the beginning of a new chapter. He sees the full map. Do not resist the reroute.
6. Some doors are permanently closed
This is often the hardest key. A permanently closed door may represent a dream you believed God for. Surrender, forgive (God and yourself), and move on. An unsurrendered life is a confused life. You cannot live in pieces. You do not need a time machine; there is only one life, and you are called to be fully present in it. Make peace with what will never be, so you can be fully present in what God is doing now. Failure is not fatal when it brings you closer to God.
Bow and say, as Jesus did, “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Peace returns when you stop fighting what God has closed.
7. Refocus on God — this is a season of spiritual growth
You do not grow when everything is open and easy. Closed doors humble you, correct you, and pull you back to your first love (Revelation 2:4). Most of the spiritual strength you carry today was forged in seasons when the door would not open. These seasons are the furnace that produces maturity, intimacy, and unshakable faith. Do not waste the resistance. Return to Him with all your heart. He is your source, not the open door.
How You Must Respond
Closed doors are portals you must go through to reach your divine destiny. They are also points of spiritual conflict. You have to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). You cannot win this battle with human understanding alone. You need the instruction of the Word, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the power of prayer. Jesus holds the keys: what He opens, no one can shut (Revelation 3:7).
You cannot afford to live a passive life. Ask. Seek. Knock. Stay full of joy. Trust His timing. Submit to His wisdom. Accept His rerouting. Surrender what is permanently closed. And above all, keep your eyes on Him.
Declarations to make today:
I will never allow the devil to steal my joy. The joy of the Lord is my strength.
I trust Your timing, Lord. I refuse to lean on my own understanding.
I trust Your wisdom. Even when I do not understand, I believe You know better.
I accept Your rerouting. You are redirecting my path for my good and Your glory.
I surrender every dream that does not align with Your will. I will not live in regret.
I will not live a passive life. I will fight the good fight of faith.
I choose to refocus on You. You alone are my source and my portion.
I receive Your peace. I will not live in pieces.
Above every breakthrough and every closed door, I choose You, Lord. You are my first love.
Closed doors will come. The warfare is real. But you were never called to face them alone or without joy. Keep knocking. Keep trusting. Keep loving Him more than the open door. The One who holds the keys is still on your side.
