Apostle Ricky Dhingra: How to Make Right Decisions: Nine Keys From God's Word
"God's will is not an accident, and your life is not an accident either. Take responsibility."

Last week we asked why we must make decisions. Today we ask how.

A question troubles everyone. If God exists, is He so in control of every event on earth that only His will happens, whatever we do? Or do I have a role? I want to tell you that you have a very active role. When God made man, He gave him a mind to reason, a will to choose and emotions. That is the realm where God will not interfere. He influences it.

God is sovereign, and "we know that all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28). But man's will is also part of it. You cannot stay passive in your own destiny.

1. Create a Space for Reflection

Every day, create a space where you are alone with God. Prayer is not only a time to speak. It is also a time to be silent. If you speak and do not listen, prayer becomes a monologue. But prayer is a dialogue.

"Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day" (Psalm 25:4-5).

Nothing comes from heaven without prayer. "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you" (Matthew 7:7). Prayer is also a sign of trust. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6). Whoever has no time with God is trusting his own wisdom.

When Adam sinned, the first thing he did was hide. "I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself" (Genesis 3:10). But before that, "they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25). If I do not keep bringing my hidden thoughts, struggles and questions before God, sooner or later my decisions will go wrong.

So choose a time and choose a place. Jesus asked, "Could ye not watch with me one hour?" (Matthew 26:40). Make one hour your minimum.

Those who pray regularly live a naturally supernatural life. "Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it" (Isaiah 30:21).

2. Fill Your Mind With the Word

"Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" (Romans 12:2).

The worldly way says, "Empty your mind, and you will find God's hidden will." That is not the believer's way. Our faith is not anti-intellectual. The believer's way is to fill your mind with the Word of God. Read the Word, and you will begin to think the way God thinks.

The Word also cures comparison. Most depression and jealousy come from comparing ourselves with others, because people don't know what God wants for them. The psalmist said, "My feet were almost gone... when I saw the prosperity of the wicked... Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end" (Psalm 73:2-3, 17). They are running a different race, for a prize that perishes.

As a new believer in Kolkata, I would lie in my small room with my Bible and notebook, reading and writing down what the Lord said. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word" (1 Peter 2:2).

Here is a test for this week. For every problem and question that comes into your mind, ask, "What does the Bible say?" Where the Word is already clear, you don't need a special leading. Prayer will never replace the Word, and the Word will never replace prayer.

3. Ask for Wisdom

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" (James 1:5).

Wisdom is the one solution God gives to a thousand problems. Jesus answered the Pharisees with one line: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone" (John 8:7). That is wisdom.

4. Know God's Purpose for Your Life

Purpose transforms decision making. Lot wanted green pastures. Abraham had left home looking for a city whose builder is God. Their purposes were different, so their decisions were different.

Jesus said, "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me" (John 4:34). Don't try to be a person of everything. Your honor and the significance of your life are tied to your calling.

5. Invest in Your Atmosphere

Remove what confuses you, what manipulates you and what weakens you. When God made the earth, He divided the waters and made a firmament. He gave us an atmosphere. Create one in your life. Lot did not choose to be plundered. He chose Sodom. And "that righteous man dwelling among them... vexed his righteous soul from day to day" (2 Peter 2:8). Be intentional about godly friendships, and invest in them.

6. Invest in Your Mind

Don't stay ordinary. Build discipline, and you will not have to live in shame. Read books. Even in prison Paul asked for "the books, but especially the parchments" (2 Timothy 4:13).

7. Check Your Motives

"All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits" (Proverbs 16:2). Ask, "Why do I want to do this? Are my intentions pure?"

8. Take Counsel

"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14). Seek the counsel of your pastors, leaders and godly friends. I expect God to speak in any way He chooses. Once I was driving to a meeting, asking the Lord whether to preach the message I had prepared from Genesis. A man on a bike passed me with "Genesis" printed on the back of his shirt.

9. Count the Cost

Many people make a decision, a problem comes, and they step back. Jesus said to sit down first and count the cost (Luke 14:28). Ask, "What will this decision require? How will it affect others? Am I ready?"

Today, put the excuses aside and say, "I am responsible for my life. I will build it so that I can make right decisions."

Go Deeper: I Have Decided
