Apostle Ricky Dhingra: The Decision to Serve God: Let My People Go That They May Serve Me
"Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me" (Exodus 8:1).

We have come to the final part of this series. The book I am writing on this subject is much bigger, with many additions that are not in these messages. Today's decision is this: I will serve God.

Many people say they are believers, yet they have never served God in their lives. God never wants any of His sons or daughters to stay bound all their lives in a condition where they cannot serve Him.

The Night I Decided to Stay

By God's grace I am living my best life today. But it did not come easily. As soon as I was saved, I wanted my life to be useful to God. I had to fight everyone over it.

I am a very stubborn man, yet I went through such warfare that at one point I was like Elijah, asking the Lord to take my life. One night at 2 AM, with tears streaming from my eyes, I was about to pray that prayer, and suddenly the Holy Spirit stopped me. Instead I prayed, "Lord, we are not going anywhere. We will finish our work, and then we will go." Since then this has been confirmed to me prophetically many times. The message on the prayer of destiny came out of that decision.

Even if the whole world conspires against you, when a man makes a decision in his heart, every conspiracy fails. God has desires and plans for a man's life, but He honors the decisions that man makes.

Who Are You Serving?

Someone says, "I am a child of God," but he is serving Pharaoh. Jacob served Laban for twenty years, and Laban admitted, "I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake" (Genesis 30:27). In Egypt, Israel, the most blessed family on earth, served their enemy. Bondage is evil. Poverty is evil.

Today ministry needs a lot of money, especially when you travel to the nations. If I am in bondage, how can I serve? If mammon is a system, many people are serving it without wanting to, spending their lives in worry and fear.

When I was a child, a cook came to work in our home. Our house was very strict, and he soon ran away. My younger brother met him and asked why he left. He said, "Your house is a cage." My brother replied, "But in a cage you get plenty of grain." That is the trap. What use is your good job, your talent and your gifts if they are all serving the enemy?

God did not only judge Egypt. He said, "Against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment" (Exodus 12:12). He dealt with the powers that held His people. And He did not let them leave empty-handed: "the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians" (Exodus 12:36).

Choose glory. Choose excellence. Choose Jesus. "A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14). The decision to serve God is also a decision not to serve Satan, not to bow before him and not to waste my life.

Service Begins With Worship

Serving God is not an ambition like "I want to become a pastor." Jesus said, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve" (Matthew 4:10). Before you do anything for God, you serve God Himself. It begins in three ways:

  • Devotion: you become devoted and dedicated to Him.

  • Worship: a servant is found worshiping and praying, alone and with others.

  • Surrender: my will, my life, my dreams and my plans belong to Him. "Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1).

A servant obeys. Would you keep a servant in your house who never listens? Jesus said a servant who comes in from the field still prepares his master's meal first (Luke 17:7-8). Obedience also means love, even for those who have hurt us.

Many Ways to Serve

Serving God is not only standing at the gate or guarding the pastor. Some serve through giving. Some serve through prayer. Some serve God in the position of authority where He placed them. A member of Parliament in Britain was told by a preacher that God had placed him there for a purpose, and he gave his whole life to ending slavery. Acts of kindness to others are also service to God.

  • Learn to do good: "Learn to do well" (Isaiah 1:17). Doing evil is easy. Doing good takes discipline. Some people are committed to bringing you down. Be more committed to going up.

  • Don't try to prove yourself: time writes the story. Turn one page and you will see who is a friend.

  • Keep growing: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God... that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

  • Win souls: if you go to heaven without winning a single soul, who will welcome you there? "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:20).

  • Be a steward: your time, money, talents, gifts and calling all belong to God and must be used for His glory.

  • Lift others up: Jesus asked which of us would not pull "an ass or an ox fallen into a pit" out on the Sabbath (Luke 14:5). Encourage people, lead them to the Lord and share your faith.

Recently in Dar es Salaam, a preacher showed me a book beside him and said, "This book came from you. The message you preached stayed with me." That is the fruit of service.

Don't Let the Birds Steal the Word

When the Word is sown and not taken deep into the heart, "then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown" (Matthew 13:19). If only your emotions were stirred, the teaching will be stolen. Meditate on these nine messages until they settle deep inside you.

Make this decision consciously today: "The greatest privilege of my life is to be called a servant of God."

Go Deeper: I Have Decided

Serving God wholeheartedly is the last of the five decisions in the book. This Decision series is drawn from my book I Have Decided (Hindi: मैंने निर्णय लिया है). Anchored in Daniel 1:8, it leads you into five life-changing decisions: to get serious with God, become a vessel of value, invest your life in Him, live with unshakable faith, and serve Him wholeheartedly.
