Apostle Ricky Dhingra: The Decision to Become Valuable: Don't Live a Worthless Life
"Your value is not in what you receive. Your value is in what you give."

So far in this series we have learned that life is what you make it. A man can never escape responsibility for his life. God's Word urges us, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19). Nobody can say, "I am just a victim of circumstances." Wherever you are, you can make decisions that give direction to your life.

In Hindi I said it with a play on words: "Woh car hai, lekin woh to bekaar hai." That is a car, but it is useless. Many people are like that. Today's decision is this: I will become a valuable person.

Please don't waste these three months. Revisit the messages, read the passages again, check your notes and write in your journal what you decided. Some people have already forgotten what they decided last week.

Daniel Was Too Valuable to Ignore

When I buy something, I am ready to pay, but it must be useful to me. Something worth lakhs that is of no use to me is worthless. When you clean your house, you don't throw out what has value. You throw out the garbage. Some things in your life are only garbage.

Daniel came to Babylon as a captive, yet he became so valuable that the kingdom could not stand without him. Kings changed, and the next king still needed him. The queen said, "There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him" (Daniel 5:11).

What were Daniel's secrets?

  • He did not compromise his integrity or his moral values.

  • He was excellent, but without compromise.

  • He walked by prayer and the understanding God gave him.

  • When he became powerful, he stayed faithful.

  • He feared God more than men and kept eternity before his eyes.

  • He influenced a nation through humility.

Someone says, "My salary is two lakhs." Your value is not in what you receive but in what you give. "A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" (Luke 12:15). Perhaps the company pays him two lakhs because he is valuable to it. If you are struggling in your job or business, add value to your life, so that people ask, "How can the work go on without you?"

What Makes a Person Worthless

A worthless person only complains. He has many excuses for his struggles but takes no action to change them. He blames others and wastes the opportunities he receives. He contributes nothing to any relationship or to society.

Why? Because there is no growth. He did not learn from his mistakes or try to become better. Your body, your mind, your understanding of your work and your knowledge of the Word must keep growing. Who will make your life better?

The man who hid his talent said, "I knew thee that thou art an hard man... and I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth" (Matthew 25:24-25). The Lord called him a "wicked and slothful servant" (Matthew 25:26). If you knew He was strict, why did you bury what He gave you? Money increases when value increases.

The Bible shows us others:

  • The sons of Eli: "Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD" (1 Samuel 2:12). They abused their priestly authority and stole God's offerings.

  • Nabal: "As his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him" (1 Samuel 25:25). He was selfish, greedy and ungrateful, even after David protected his flocks.

  • Sodom: they did not know how to honor guests. "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares" (Hebrews 13:2).

Worthless people drain the energy of others. Nobody is born worthless. People become worthless through their own choices.

Live Intentionally

For most of my life I kept to myself. My teams were broken and ministries were broken, so I lived in my own bubble. Now I have made up my mind to be intentional. I greet everyone. Recently, while I was eating, a young woman sat beside me. She was a pastor's daughter, and I listened to her story for an hour and a half. Many children of pastors feel the pressure of being watched, and some rebel. My aim in a conversation is not to win. It is to leave people with their own conscience before God.

How long will you live at the mercy of circumstances? When you choose what you want, you also choose what you don't want. If I choose good songs, I am choosing not to listen to the wrong ones. Songs are powerful. What you feed on, you begin to live.

Honor God

Worthlessness starts with dishonoring God. One man told me, "We love the Lord. We fast and pray, but we don't go to church." Whoever loves God will honor His Word and long to be part of a community of believers. Some believers don't even tell their friends they follow Jesus. Struggle is part of the Christian life, because we are not yet perfect. But the heart will still want to do what is right in God's eyes.

I have chosen to live this way. It has brought pain, sacrifices and even some mistakes. But "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ" (Romans 1:16), and I am not ashamed to serve Him.

Become a Blessing

Pray that when people remember you, they bless you instead of cursing you. How?

  • Do your work faithfully. Doing your work quietly and well will bless countless people.

  • Solve problems. A company pays you for the problems you solve. Become the solution to some problem in your generation.

  • Earn trust. Love is given, but trust is earned through honesty and consistency.

  • Use your gifts. If a man can play satanic songs on a guitar, a child of God can play songs that bring sinners to Jesus.

  • Be dependable in hard times. Everyone is tested in bad times. That is when lasting value is proven.

Make up your mind: "I will not let my grief become final. I will not become bitter. I will not become worthless."

Go Deeper: I Have Decided

Becoming a vessel of value is one of the five decisions at the heart of the book. This Decision series is drawn from my book I Have Decided (Hindi: मैंने निर्णय लिया है). Anchored in Daniel 1:8, it leads you into five life-changing decisions: to get serious with God, become a vessel of value, invest your life in Him, live with unshakable faith, and serve Him wholeheartedly.
